1. Reactive astrocyte diversity and function in neurodegenerative disease
Our lab investigates how distinct reactive astrocyte subpopulations emerge in neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's disease. We define the molecular identity, spatial distribution, and functional roles of these astrocyte states, and determine how they influence amyloid pathology, neuronal integrity, disease progression, and repair. By integrating single-cell, spatial, and in vivo approaches, we aim to identify astrocyte-specific programs that can be targeted for therapy.
2. Astrocyte and microglia communication in the diseased brain
Our lab studies how reactive astrocytes and microglia communicate in the diseased brain. We examine bidirectional signaling between these glial populations and determine how this crosstalk shapes neuroinflammation, synaptic function, plaque associated responses, and neuronal survival. Using genetic models, imaging, and molecular profiling, we seek to define glial interaction networks that drive or limit neurodegenerative progression.
3. Transcriptional mapping of human astrocytes in health and disease
Our lab maps the transcription factor programs that define human astrocyte identity across normal and disease states. We investigate how these regulatory networks are altered in neurodegeneration and how they contribute to astrocyte dysfunction, disease vulnerability, and pathological progression. By linking human datasets with mechanistic studies in experimental models, we aim to uncover core transcriptional regulators that can serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
